Write Before You Die?

Posted on

Ok, let’s cut right to the chase. In the west, we do NOT like to see death. We do not like to even think about death. When it makes an appearance, we dress up the body with nicer clothes than the person may have worn in life. We spend enormous amounts of money on caskets and flowers, but death is still there.

So, let’s face it for a moment. If you KNEW for certain that you were going to be dead in exactly five years, what would you write? What would you want to tell the world? What type of book would you want to be your legacy?

You say, “Mark, you are kidding, right?”

Nope, nope, and NOPE!

Don’t worry, it appears you have five (5) WHOLE years to write it, so why not put off until tomorrow what you could have done today?

However, what if you KNEW for certain that the deadline for you to meet death was moved up to just one year? What are you going to say now? Does the book you would have written with five years of your life hold as much importance now?

One more time – what if you KNEW for certain that you would die in 60 days? Would you write anything? What would you leave the world as your legacy? Would they remember the work you put into sharing your knowledge and into trying to make the world a better place with your words?

Here is the point to remember. You do NOT know for certain how long you have left. Sadly, some people (including want-to-writers) procrastinate thinking that they have an entire lifetime of years to get ready, write, edit, and then publish their great work.

BUT, you may not have as long as you think. What will you do with your day, your week, your month, or your year when it comes to writing?

Write NOW or somebody will write about you, and they may not say what you think they will.

I would honestly write my story in script form and then leave in my will that if they make a movie about it, I’d want my part played by Anthony Hopkins. Silence of the Lambs… really good stuff!

StCyril, thanks for stopping by. I am sure that must be an interesting story if you want your part played by Hopkins! LOL

Actually had these sobering thoughts myself recently. Great minds think alike.

Yes, we do often think alike! The more I write, the more I realize that we are striving to leave a lasting legacy, but must do so in light of eternity.
