The appeal of writing can be compared to the appeal of policework. Many people become police officers expecting a lot of excitement only to find the overwhelming majority of their time is not spent chasing bad guys (as they had imagined) but it is spent on paperwork, court appearances, and performing many other monotonous–but necessary–tasks.
If you’re anything like me, it seems like 5% of your work on any given project is the actual writing, while 95% of your labor is reading over your work, making edits and corrections, reading over your work, making edits and corrections, reading over your work, making edits and corrections (repeat a few billion more times).
